Three students from Eastern View High School in Culpeper, Virginia, are being recognized as local heroes after rescuing three people whose kayak capsized during the school’s golf team tryouts.
Andrew Tuggle, Gavin Cain, and Jackson Castro were participating in tryouts at the Country Club of Culpeper when they heard desperate cries for help coming from nearby Lake Culpeper. What began as an ordinary afternoon on the golf course quickly became a life-or-death emergency.
Students Jump Into Action to Rescue Family
The students were near the second hole when they noticed that a kayak carrying two adults and a 3-year-old child had overturned in the lake.
According to local reports, the young child was the only person wearing a life jacket. The two adults struggled to stay above water as the kayak drifted away, creating a dangerous situation before emergency responders could arrive.
Without hesitation, the teenagers dropped their golf clubs, ran down a steep, rocky embankment covered with thick brush, and jumped into the water.
They swam approximately 50 yards toward the struggling family, making the child their first priority.
Andrew Tuggle later described the frightening moment, explaining that one of the adults was trying to hold the child above the water but was becoming exhausted and slipping underwater in the process.

The students successfully reached the family and helped all three victims safely return to shore before emergency personnel arrived.
After the rescue, one of the adults personally thanked the teenagers for their courage.
“You saved my life,” the rescued man told Andrew Tuggle.

Coach Thornhill instead instructed them to return home, change into dry clothes, and recover.
Remarkably, within about 20 minutes, the three students returned to finish the tryout.

Tuggle, Cain, and Castro each earned a spot on Eastern View High School’s golf team and are now preparing to compete in their first tournament of the season.
