SAIL program has five new instructors

Five volunteers have been certified as senior fitness instructors by the American Senior Fitness Association and are now teaching Stay Active and Independent for Life classes in Wenatchee and East Wenatchee.
The five are:
- Patty Getzin, SAIL instructor, activities director and food director at assisted living facility. Getzin also completed the Train the Trainer for SAIL Instructors classes in June.
- Judy Preston, BSN, RN at Community Choice, SAIL instructor. Preston has been a SAIL instructor since 2007. She is also a SAIL instructor trainer.
- Lynne Barnhart, M.Ed, retired, currently a SAIL instructor. Barnhart is currently teaches SAIL classes in East Wenatchee.
- John Luce, SAIL instructor. Luce, a retired professional kickboxer, remains active in outdoor sports. He is currently teaching a SAIL class in Wenatchee.
- Karen Baumgarner, registered pharmacist at Top Food and Drug. Baumgarner is a substitute SAIL instructor and also completed Train the Trainer for SAIL Instructors classes in June.
The SAIL program was created through a research and falls prevention grant from the Washington State Department of Health and the North West Orthopedic Institute in Tacoma. SAIL classes are one-hour sessions, taught by a qualified exercise instructor, gear specifically for persons 65 and up, designed to help maintain and improve strength, balance and mobility.
The SAIL program is supported through donations and coordinated through the Lifetime Wellness Coalition.
The ASFA certificate provides in-depth and intimate training regarding exercise and the aging process, assisting trainers to provide more productive, safe exercise based in an individuals level of physical fitness.
SAIL classes are offered free to seniors age 65 and up at the following locations:
