Nonprofits get boost through Community Foundation of North Central Washington

Community Foundation of North Central Washington has received a $75,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to increase local assistance for families facing economic challenges and other setbacks as a result of the recession.
Through the Gates Foundation grant, the Community Foundation of North Central Washington will provide funding to local nonprofits through a new funding initiative, The Gates Great Giving Match.
Nonprofit organizations in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties that work to connect residents to existing public benefits and other assistance; to help prevent and reduce family violence; and to provide more food and support for people struggling to feed their families will be invited to participate in the initiative.
“North Central Washington is fortunate to have some of the highest functioning nonprofits in the state, said Community Foundation of NCW Executive Director Beth Stipe. “Even with great efficiency and effective programs, they are struggling to keep up with the demand on their services, which have increased in many cases, overnight. At the same time, they are dealing with a decrease in donations from individuals, government and fee for service revenues as the recession takes effect in our region. These organizations are the safety net for our communities and the Gates Foundation is offering us a chance to throw them a life raft.”
In today’s difficult economic times, thousands of families in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties are struggling with job losses, dwindling savings, and foreclosures or evictions. At the same time, many local nonprofit organizations in north central Washington are experiencing a growing demand for their services.
The Community Foundation of North Central Washington has been a leader in charitable giving in north central Washington for over 23 years. The Gates Great Giving Match initiative will leverage the funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with a community match of $75,000, raised through donations from individuals, business and community organizations.
This initiative is modeled after a successful program created at the Jackson Hole Community Foundation, which will provide technical support for Gates Great Giving Match participants free of charge.
Each nonprofit organization working in support of struggling families in north central Washington will be invited to raise donations from their donors, and CFNCW will provide technical support to help organizations expand their donor networks, as well as an additional cash match from the pool of Gates Great Giving Match community donations.
The new funding for the Community Foundation of North Central Washington is one of 12 grants announced Oct. 29 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in response to the growing needs of communities throughout Washington state. Nine additional community foundations are receiving funding to increase support services in their communities, and grant funding will help the Washington State Library increase programs to connect patrons with job-seeking assistance. The LAW Fund is receiving a grant to help provide critical legal services for low-income Washingtonians facing economic hardship or family crises.
