Meetings

The Rental Association of Wenatchee Valley meets at 5 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Eagles Lodge, 1208 N. Wenatchee Ave., Wenatchee, across from the Red Lion Hotel. The buffet dinner and networking start at 5 p.m. The meeting starts at 5:45. The cost for dinner is $13 plus tax. This month’s speaker, Maureen Fry of IRS Environmental, will explain new federal residential lead legislation. The organization is for landlords helping landlords. The public is invited. Toastmasters Cascade Speakeasy Chapter offers a welcome environment for members to practice public speaking skills. The Wenatchee Chamber of Commerce Noon Network

Workshops

SCORE Counselors to America’s Small Business is offering the following business workshops in November to train entrepreneurs on various business topics:

  • Nov. 4: “What records do I need?” Learn what and how to keep records for income reporting to the Department of Revenue.
  • Nov. 10: “Get ready for tax season and the end of the year.” Tips on how to prepare for your tax preparer; expenses you can deduct; and some year end tax planning strategy.
  • Dec. 2: “Planning for the future.” Now is the time to take a look at where you are and where you want to be. Updating your business plan is your road to success.

Workshops are held from noon to 1 p.m. at the North Central Regional Library, Service Center Business Office, 16 N. Columbia St., Wenachee. The cost is $5 for each workshop.

The Washington State Department of Revenue’s free workshop for new and small business owners is 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Douglas County Fire District, 377 Eastmont Ave., East Wenatchee. Participants will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, and sales tax collection and record-keeping requirements. An informal setting allows participants to ask questions specific to their businesses, and all receive a helpful workbook and reference guide to Department rules and regulations. The Construction Continuing Education Center of America (previously known as the Construction Industry Training Council) is offering Electrical Continuing Education classes, Basic Classroom Electrical Training (BCET) classes for electrical trainees, and Plumbing Continuing Education classes in November. Events

“Shades of Green” is the topic of the Greater Wenatchee Technology Alliance’s interactive presentation, a virtual walk about North Central Washington, offering insight to the region’s abundant green and clean resources, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at The Atrium at McDees Art Center, 34 N. Chelan Ave., Wenatchee. The event will showcase local businesses and highlight the area’s innovative and interesting offerings. RSVP by Nov. 10 to rsvp@gwata.org. The Spirit of AZ Wells Starlight Gala is at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Wenatchee Convention Center Grand Ballroom. Philanthropists Si and Corina Bautista are the recipients of this year’s “Spirit of AZ Wells” award. BJ Thomas, whose hits include “Rain drops keep fallin on my head” and “Hooked on a feeling,” is the guest entertainer for the evening. The gala is presented by the Central Washington Hospital Foundation and all proceeds will benefit the Foundation’s Capital Campaign. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased by calling the foundation at 665-6030.

2009 Festival of Trees Gala tickets are on sale now. The Nov. 21 gala is a black tie-optional benefit for the Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee, presented by Wenatchee Valley Medical Center.  Tickets are $125 per person. The North Central Home Builders Association

The Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee, 123 N. Wenatchee Ave., Wenatchee, will host the following events:

  • Alex de Grassi, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5. Often cited as one of the world’s top finger style, steel-string acoustic guitarists, Grammy nominated Alex de Grassi brings a unique voice to the art of acoustic guitar. Tickets are $14-$27.
  • Champions of Dance, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8. World Professional Ballroom Dance Champions do Latin, Rumba, Waltz, Jive and more. Tickets are $27-$37.
  • Iology: Woody Woodward. A documentary movie premier based on the law of importance followed by a motivational speech by Woody Woodward, the author of “Millionaire Dropouts” series. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
  • Great Big Sea, 8 p.m. Nov. 19. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 day of show. A folk-rock band from Newfoundland.
  • Festival of Trees, Nov. 21-22 at the Wenatchee Red Lion Hotel. Free public viewing of trees from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. A gala auction dinner is at 6 p.m. Saturday. Advance ticket purchase required.
  • Holiday Spice, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3. The Third Annual Holiday Spice entertainment extravaganza features talented and dedicated local performers coming together to showcase the holiday season. The annual Stanley Lifetime Achievements Awards Winners will be recognized at the event. Tickets are $16-$18.
  • The Hobbit, 6:30 p.m. Jan. 6. A Giant Theatrical Puppet production based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. For children in third grade and up. Tickets $16-$19.50.
  • Jazznights, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14. Featuring visiting professional jazz musicians who include Clay Jenkins, trumpet; Ira Nepus, trombone; Tom Peterson, saxophone; Rich Eames, piano; Jeff D’Angelo, bass; Dick Weller, drums. Tickets are $17-$28.
  • Gaelic Storm, 8 p.m. Jan 24. Gaelic Storm provides original and fresh arrangements steeped in Celtic traditional melody, combined with blend of world rhythms. Tickets are $20.75-$35.
  • Happily Ever After, a Cinderella Tale, 6:30 p.m Feb. 16. Pushcart Players present an all new and most enchanting musical adaptation of the classic tale that takes us on a magic journey fueled by inner beauty, courage and kindness as they triumph over greed, arrogance and bully behavior.   • Mark Nizer, 6:30 p.m. May 12. Original comedy, world class juggling, movement, music and a focus on technology. Tickets are $16-$19.

Opportunities

YWCA Wenatchee Valley is looking for volunteers for the weekly estate sales. Volunteers typically work Tuesday mornings until mid-day, then again on Thursday from morning to late afternoon. A variety of volunteer jobs are available. For information call Maria at 662-3531.

WSU Master Gardeners are offering a 13-week online training course, tentatively scheduled to begin Jan. 12 and run through April 13, 2010. In addition to the online training, optional in-class sessions, taught by local experts, provide a forum for discussion and questions and answers. The in-class sessions are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the WSU Chelan County Extension office at 400 Washington St., Wenatchee. Some of the subjects are botany, entomology, soils, lawns, plant identification and diagnosis of plant problems. Students who complete the online course serve the community as home-garden horticulture advisors. Cost of the training is $150. Application deadline is Nov. 20. The Literacy Council of Chelan and Douglas Counties is seeking new volunteer English language tutors for the 2009/2010 class year. No experience necessary.
