Burger King building razed to make way for Wheatland Bank

In September, Wheatland Bank announced its plans to build a new branch on the former Burger King property at 1115 N. Miller St., Wenatchee.
On Nov. 16, the demolition phase of the project got its start. (Note the location of the pay phone in the staff photo taken in September in relation to the demolition photos) It took the Spokane, Wash.-based contractor Rob’s Demolition about five hours to raze the 3,291-square-foot structure.
The bank purchased the property from the Aramazd and Anahid Mansourian Living Trust in September for $700,000. The property had stood vacant since the franchise eatery closed in 2005.
The bank is set to begin construction on a new 5,500 square-foot branch in the spring.
Wheatland Bank Chairwoman and CEO Susan Horton said the bank made the decision not to delay demolition until next year because people in the community told them they wanted to have the eyesore gone. She could not give a cost estimate yet on the construction because the plans are still in the finalizing stage. However, she does anticipate breaking ground in early spring and being open in the new facility by year end 2010.
Right now the bank is preparing to open its new Yakima branch in a remodeled 10,000-square-foot former Petco building it purchased for $1.9 million earlier this year. After the new Yakima and Wenatchee branches are open, Horton said she sees more growth on the horizon for the Spokane, Wash.-based bank given the track record she’s seen in the central Washington area.
“We now have branches in Wenatchee, Yakima, Ellensburg and Chelan. With those four branches and Quincy we have over $100 million in new business on the books in loans and deposits combined,” she said. “The board and management are extremely pleased with that kind of reception. We also remain one of the few banks in the state of Washington that is ranked 5 stars by Bauer Financial and one of the few banks that did not take a taxpayer bailout. Things are going very well and we are anticipating a lot more growth. We envision a lot of that will occur in the central Washington region.”
In addition, Horton said the bank has fielded calls from customers interested in investing in Wheatland Bank and the company is considering a stock offering.
